Derryn Hinch is facing a major battle with liver cancer

When Derryn Hinch gave up booze for good, he thought he'd turned his life - and health around. Only a couple of weeks ago he said he'd never felt better. But being diagnosed with liver cancer as a hangover of his previous life of boozing seems like a cruel blow when he'd turned his back on your vices and tried to be the picture of health.

Liver cancer is not a disease I'd like. Generally the prognosis is shocking. Very few people are fortunate enough, like Derryn Hinch to be able to have a liver resection at all. Even then few people talk about the 70% 5 year survival rates he mentioned in his press release.

I admire the way he has decided to take the diagnosis on board head held high and fight this next battle with dignity and courage. I wish him so much luck with the surgery and with what will be an extraordinarily difficult few months.

We discussed this on Sunrise this morning with his colleague and friend Neil Mitchell from 3AW (you can watch that HERE) as well as the Morning Show with Peter Ford (you can watch that HERE)

One of my loveliest and gentlest patients lost his battle with liver cancer a few months back. It was a heartbreaking journey for him and his family. It's left me a little reserved in my prognosis. Still, I hope Derryn's optimistic take on this illness is borne out in reality.
